The forefoot contains the five toes (phalanges) and the five longer bones (metatarsals).  the nail beds & the skin covering the dorsal surfaces of the terminal phalanges are supplied by the medial and lateral plantar nerves. Damp body surfaces are ideal breeding grounds for fungal infections such as athlete's foot.

The five metatarsals connect the midfoot to the toes and fourteen phalanges make up the toes themselves.

The phalanges are the small bones of the toes. The foot consists of thirty three bones, twenty six joints and over a hundred muscles, ligaments and tendons.
